When Was Gravity Created? [a Critique of Pseudoscientific Skepticism:]
**When was gravity
created?** Ask yourself this question anytime you want to say of any concept or
phenomenon that it lacks “scientific evidence”. So what? The Earth existed long
before there was geology, and Life existed long before there was biology. We don’t
invent the facts that science finds; if science truly has been based on fact,
then facts precede all scientific theory and, as such, all scientific evidence.
A fact is that which must remain a fact although it is ignored. How is this not the case with something like astrology? The stars existed long before there was astrology, astronomy, or astronautics. Yet the findings of astrologers are not *invalidated* by the findings of astronomers or astronauts; they simply don’t agree. The scientific landscape must be riddled with discrepancies, and even the most stringent of philosophers of science (Bertrand Russell, for example) say these contradictions are to be expected.
We have had to deal with
Gravity for centuries upon millennia. The facts have ruled the lives of those
who chose to recognize those facts as well as those who chose to overlook them,
and this was the case for centuries before there was a theory we could “prove”
with “evidence”. Only the fool denies that what goes up comes down, and yet one
does not need to be a physicist if one is not to be a fool.
In many ways, the physicist becomes the fool when his insistence on a theory overshadows the reality of that which he describes. What else do we define as a “neurotic” but the one who cannot see what’s right in front of him but only sees abstractions? What is “mental illness” but an illness that persists in consciousness when all the outer stimuli have been removed, and what is *ignorance* if not the lack in consciousness of things which nonetheless persist as outer stimuli?
The findings of
astrologers are every bit as real as gravity, though we have yet to find a
“scientific” explanation for them, much less evidence to prove or to disprove
that theory, and the simple fact that certain theories and interpretations of
Astrology have been disproven doesn’t make the facts presented by astrologers
just disappear; it reinforces them!!
If science truly must be
based in fact, then fact comes first and theory follows afterwards. It will be
long before the scientists explain why Scorpios behave the way they do, why
Tauruses are as they are, etc. Yet we will never have a theory that describes
these things effectively if we ignore them altogether. Slacking off on work
does not excuse you from the impositions of your audience. If scientists enjoy
their lifestyle owing to their job, and if their job is not to preach but to
explain, they owe an explanation for why certain strange phenomena occur; the
moment they dismiss the strange phenomena, the ones who know the strange
phenomena most intimately lose their faith in Science.
